Preparing for Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is one of the most effective ways to get rid of hair on your body and face. Though the risks associated with laser hair removal are minimal, it’s important to properly prep your skin before getting the procedure done. Here are some important things to know before getting laser hair removal:

Certain Medications Cause Irritation

Some medications, such as anti-inflammatory medications, Vitamin E supplements and nonsteroidal medications can cause skin burns and tissue damage. Make sure you tell your doctor all the medications you are taking prior to the procedure to avoid these irritations.

Shaving Protocol

Physicians suggest shaving 24-48 hours prior to the procedure. If your hair is too short, the laser beam won’t be able to pinpoint the hair follicle. Avoid waxing all together if you plan on getting laser hair removal because pulling the hair directly from the root can make it even less accurate.

Pain Management Options

Laser hair removal often causes redness and stinging. Depending on your pain tolerance, you may need an anesthetic. Ask your specialist about the options if you experience discomfort after the first procedure.

Avoid the Sun

Being in the sun doesn’t necessarily impact the results of laser hair removal, but it does increase the chance for skin discoloration. A lot of physicians will suggest staying out of the sun for six weeks prior to laser hair removal.
